Narcissists are experts at manipulating and controlling others through a carefully crafted web of tactics. Here’s a glimpse into their toolbox:
Idealization and Devaluation: They shower you with affection and praise at first (idealization), creating an emotional bond. Then, abruptly, they shift to criticism and belittlement (devaluation), leaving you confused and desperate to regain their approval.
Gaslighting: They deny or twist events, making you question your own perception of reality. This erodes your trust in yourself and your judgment, making you more susceptible to their control.
Isolation: They may try to cut you off from friends and family, making you dependent on them for emotional support and increasing your vulnerability.
Guilt and Shame: They manipulate your emotions by making you feel guilty for their unhappiness or ashamed of your needs.
Playing the Victim: They portray themselves as the victim of circumstance or mistreatment, gaining your sympathy and deflecting accountability.
This relentless manipulation keeps you off-balance, doubting yourself, and ultimately, under their control.
