Despite the discard, a narcissist might try to maintain a connection for a few reasons. One reason is to control the narrative. They may want to downplay the abuse or paint you as the unreasonable one. Another reason is to maintain access to you as a source of attention or validation. Even negative attention can fuel their ego. Additionally, they might keep you close to triangulate you with a new partner, creating jealousy or drama. Finally, if their new relationship fails, they might see you as a backup option.
It’s important to remember that a friendship with a narcissist is unlikely to be healthy or reciprocal. Their motives are often self-serving, and they may continue manipulative behaviors.
